Headshots tips and tricks

When deciding what to wear for a professional headshot photoshoot, it's important to choose clothing that is appropriate for the industry and professional setting. Here are some general tips for both men and women:

  • Avoid clothing with busy patterns or logos, as they can be distracting in photos. Solid colors or simple, subtle patterns typically work best.

  • Make sure your clothes are clean, ironed, and fit well. Wrinkled or ill-fitting clothes can make you look unprofessional.

Clothing

WOMEN

For women, some specific clothing suggestions for a professional headshot photoshoot include:

  • A tailored suit or jacket with a blouse or dress shirt. Again, neutral colors are a good choice.

  • A collared blouse or shirt with slacks or a skirt. Avoid skirts that are too short or tight, as they can be distracting in photos.

  • A dress that is appropriate for the professional setting. Avoid dresses that are too revealing or have busy patterns.

Overall, the key is to wear clothing that makes you look polished and professional, while also being appropriate for your industry and the setting in which the photos will be taken.

MAkeup and skincare

With headshots your expression is the star of the show, so it’s best to keep your makeup natural.

Here are some quick tips:

1.      Start with a clean, moisturized face to create a smooth base for your makeup.

2.      Use a primer to help your makeup stay in place and last longer.

3.      Use a concealer to cover up any blemishes or dark circles under your eyes.

4.      Use a foundation that matches your skin tone to even out your skin and create a natural-looking base.

5.      Use a bronzer or blush to add some color to your cheeks and give your face some dimension.

6.      Use a highlighter to add some shimmer to your cheekbones, brow bones, and cupid's bow.

7.      Use a neutral eyeshadow palette to create a natural, everyday look.

8.      Use a waterproof mascara to define your lashes and avoid any smudging or smearing.

9.      Use a lip balm or lip gloss to moisturize your lips and add some shine.

MEN

For men, some specific clothing suggestions for a professional headshot photoshoot include:

  • A tailored suit or blazer with a dress shirt. Choose a neutral color like navy, grey, or black.

  • A collared shirt with slacks or dress pants. Again, neutral colors are a safe bet.

  • If you're in a more casual industry, a collared shirt and sport coat or blazer can work well.

If you want to add individual style to the photo, then you may consider options such as v-neck sweaters over your dress shirt, or a tie that makes a statement.

Even plain freshly pressed T-shirts can work.

MEN

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Colours can be simple, neutral. Avoid bright shirts.

Collars can be your best friend or enemy. Crisp collars look amazing in headshots, loose collars can give a much more casual look (sometimes even sloppy).

The squinch

The "Squinch" is a term coined by one of the world's top headshot photographers; Peter Hurley.

Using the small muscles under your eyes a tiny bit can make a big difference.

Check out this video and practice.

It may not work for everyone, but when it does it's a game changer.
